CPJ calls on U.N. to demand release of jailed journalists during COVID-19 pandemic
April 12: Ahaval News reported the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called on the United Nations to demand the release of jailed journalists during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CPJ explained that journalists provide an essential public service by providing a consistent flow of information for the public to make informed decisions.
The letter submission from CPJ is in support of their #FreeThePress campaign that is fighting to protect journalists detained in inhumane conditions.
A specific statement from the letter to the UN reads:
“While CPJ has been active in supporting journalists still carrying out their work, we are fearful for those journalists currently imprisoned, who are unable to take necessary precautions. The U.N. and its special mandate holders must take action on behalf of this, particularly vulnerable group. ”
