CNN anchor Chris Cuomo diagnosed with coronavirus; he will continue working from home
March 31: Chris Cuomo, a broadcast journalist for CNN, was diagnosed on Tuesday with COVID-19. Cuomo has remained in the spotlight during the pandemic partly because of his interviews with his brother and Governor of NY, Andrew Cuomo.
CNN reported that Cuomo is feeling well and will continue to anchor his 9 p.m. show “Cuomo Prime Time” from his home.
Cuomo wrote an encouraging message on Twitter reading “We will all beat this by being smart and tough and united!" he wrote on Twitter.
This is the third reported case to occur of coronavirus involving CNN’s workplace in New York City. Another case occurred earlier in mid-March.
Rubio specifies journalists for 'glee' in virus deaths
March 31: According to ABC News, Marco Rubio is going back on statements he made about journalists expressing glee over the coronavirus.
The Republican senator took heat for a tweet over the weekend that said some media members “can't contain their delight” at reports that the United States had surpassed China in the number of coronavirus cases.
Rubio faced criticism from ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl for his use of the vague term “some in the media.
Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief of the Verge, defended the continued dedication of his staff by saying “Our story is anything but gleeful, and calls the administration's failure to act a ‘dark lesson. Marco Rubio should spend his time worrying about the people of Florida.”
Coronavirus is testing the power of unionized newsrooms
April 1: According to CNN Business, the coronavirus pandemic is forcing media companies to make drastic cuts and unionized newsrooms are testing out the power of collective bargaining.
NewsGuild-CWA, which represents thousands of media workers in the US and Canada, created a stimulus plan for the media that will provide federal, state, and local governments with public funds to sustain a newsroom.
The plan was unanimously passed by the labor union’s executive council on Wednesday.
Gannett Media is one of many newsrooms that have had to furlough their workers due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Gannett has not opted to bargain collectively as a unionized newsroom. Instead, Gannett staffers are individually bargaining with management over Zoom Chats, phone calls and texts.
